Henry Chalfant is best known for his photography and documentaries of New York City street art in the 1970's and '80s. A frequent collaborator with renowned photographer Martha Cooper, Chalfant sought to shed a light on the roots of hip-hop culture.
"The exciting thing about that time was you had people who had been isolated in marginal areas, plus a vital downtown art and music scene in New York. There began to be venues where people would get together on the Lower East Side... where all of these people were practicing these art forms and influencing one another." - Henry Chalfant
